The old tech

Voltage control

Only lowers the voltage while for efficient control the frequency also needs to be controlled. This greatly reduces the motor efficiency and can only be used for low torque loads like fans and pumps. There are two types of voltage controllers; transformers and TRIACs.

Transformers only offer stepped control, usually 3 or 5 speeds. They are bulky, heavy, inefficient and has low power factor.

TRIACs use electronic switches thereby reducing the size and weight, but the output voltage is chopped and this damages the motor. They offer step-less control but do not work below about half power. They give almost no energy saving at reduced speeds because more energy is lost to heat, possibly damaging the motor. The power factor is bad and gets worse at lower speed.

Traditional Variable Speed Drives

Also known as Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) or Frequency Inverters.

Require special competence to install and require that the motor is compatible and the use of special screened cables. They cause disturbing audible noise as well as radio disturbances. Because of this it is seldom an option to retrofit them to existing installations. Our controllers solve all these problems, they are as easy to install as a transformer speed controller.
